The Power of Worship

In Jeremiah 32:39, God says, “I will give them one heart and one purpose: to worship me forever.”  What is so unique about worship, that God declares it to be our highest calling and our one purpose?  From the Scriptures, here are 9 different realities that happen when we worship:

1.  Worship brings the presence of Jesus.

“No longer will there be a curse upon anything.  For the throne of God and of the Lamb will be there, and his servants will worship him.  And they will see his face.” – Revelation 22:3-4

2.  Worship removes the curse.

“No longer will there be a curse upon anything.” – Revelation 22:3

3.  Worship brings forgiveness.

“When a certain immoral woman from that city heard he was eating there, she brought a beautiful alabaster jar filled with expensive perfume.  Then she knelt behind him at his feet, weeping.  Her tears fell on his feet, and she wiped them off with her hair.  Then she kept kissing his feet and putting perfume on them. . . . Then Jesus said to the woman, ‘Your sins are forgiven.’” – Luke 7:37-38, 48

4.  Worship brings healing.

“Is there no balm in Gilead?  Is there no physician there?” – Jeremiah 8:22

The word Gilead means worship.  The verse is asking, “Is there not healing in worship?”

5.  Worship brings freedom.

“Around midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening.  Suddenly, there was a massive earthquake, and the prison was shaken to its foundations.  All the doors immediately flew open, and the chains of every prisoner fell off!” – Acts 16:25-26

As Paul and Silas worshipped, they and those around them were set free.

6.  Worship brings the blessing of God.

“I will give them one heart and one purpose: to worship me forever, for their own good and for the good of all their descendants.  And I will make an everlasting covenant with them: I will never stop doing good for them.” – Jeremiah 32:39

7.  Worship brings the voice of the Holy Spirit.

“One day as these men were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, ‘Appoint Barnabas and Saul for the special work to which I have called them.’” – Acts 13:2

The early believers received calling and direction as they worshipped.

8.  Worship brings us face to face with God.

“His servants will worship him.  And they will see his face.” – Revelation 22:3-4

9.  Worship is intercession, bringing other people to Jesus.

“In this way, Aaron will carry the names of the tribes of Israel on the sacred chest piece over his heart when he goes into the Holy Place.  This will be a continual reminder that he represents the people when he comes before the Lord.” – Exodus 28:29

Aaron carried the people on his heart as he went into the presence of God.  He brought them to the Lord, and he represented them before the Lord.  This is intercession.  In worship, we carry others into His presence.  We carry them on our hearts and represent them before the Lord.

This is the power of worship.

Worship brings the presence of Jesus, removes the curse, brings forgiveness and healing, brings freedom and blessing, brings the voice of the Holy Spirit, brings us face to face with God, and brings others into His presence.  This is the power of worship.

Many times I have said, I will worship through the darkness until I see Your face.  I will worship through the sickness until I am healed.  In heaven we will worship forever, but we will never again have the opportunity to do it through pain.  Worshipping in sickness, pain, and confusion is an offering that we can only give Him now.  Let us never waste a moment to worship Jesus, knowing that one day, as we worship, we will be free.
